Choosing a Business

Decide what you’ll sell in your online home based business. This can be a product you make such as crafts. It can be a service you offer; if you are a graphic artist, lawn care professional, day care provider, or dog walking service, you can benefit from a website to promote your home based business.

You can use a website to sell advertising space to others. You promote the site, add interesting content, build up the site’s page rank, and your virtual “real estate” becomes valuable to others.

If you own a restaurant or other type of business, you can use your website to promote it. A restaurant, for example, might post their menu, along with a way to place takeout orders, and a map of directions to their location.

Don’t try to get a famous brand domain name for another company with a different extension. You are asking for trouble with a lawsuit, especially if your site is successful.

If someone already has the same domain name you want in a different extension, getting your own version of it may not be the best idea anyway. It could actually steal some of your thunder. Let’s say a domain name exists for desiredsitename.com. You choose desiredsitename.biz instead.

Desired Sight Name (.com) has been around a while, has page ranking, and operates a successful webstore. Sometimes people “assume” a web extension is .com for a site, and that is usually the first one they’ll try. That might cost you traffic.

Also, when they type in a search for Desired Site Name, your sight might come up, right along with Desired Site Name (.com), your competition. Might not be such a good thing. You might lose the traffic to your competitor’s website.

Keyword in Domain Name
If you sell candles, you most likely want to have candle or candles as a keyword in your domain name. There are various opinions on keywords in domain names, a lot of it depends on how you plan to target traffic to your site, how you plan to use your site, and so forth.

Some website owners are not concerned with this, and others are very concerned with it. If you have an article directory, you probably would like to have article or articles in the domain name.

Length of Domain Name
I am very fussy on this subject. I’ve cautioned customers wanting to create websites with domain names such as:

Don’t laugh, I’ve seen it. First you are asking for typing mistakes EVERY time you or anyone else enters it.

Second, it won’t even fit in an email without having to wrap around, causing the reader to have to cut and paste it into the browser window in some instances.

Third, every time you add a page or image to the site, the domain name will become even LONGER.

I try my best to keep my domain names 15 characters or under. I may make an exception, depending on the name, but don’t overdo it. Keep it short, easy to type, easy to remember, and easy to spell.

Domain Name Blunders
Sometimes, unintentionally, we create domain names that seem innocent and sensible enough when we first create them. Always stand back, and take a second look at the domain name overall.

Here’s an example: your sell skin lotion, and you are thinking of the domain name Linda’s Skin Lotion. Sounds innocent enough. Let’s have a look: lindasskinlotion.com. See what I mean? Doesn’t that middle word stand out a little? I’d choose something else, if it were me.

Bandsaw for Craft Woodworking – Selection, Use and Care

My husband was in the construction business for many years. He had a lot of tools in his workshop, and some of them were very helpful when I began woodworking several years ago. I quickly found that there were some different tools I would need in order to complete my craft projects other than the ones he used in his construction business. My first purchase included a bandsaw and a scrollsaw.

One important thing to keep on hand when you do craft woodworking is extra blades. Scrollsaw and bandsaw blades break, and there is nothing worse than being in the middle of a project and having a blade break with no spare on hand. Since blades are relatively inexpensive, I always keep at least two replacement blades for the bandsaw. Scrollsaw blades typically come in packages with several blades; the ones you keep on hand will depend on the type of blade you use the most.

You can buy a bandsaw for a couple hundred dollars, or you can spend over a thousand, depending on your budget. I bought a relatively inexpensive benchtop style bandsaw and a metal bandsaw stand; the saw is easily bolted to the stand and it is very sturdy. You can purchase bandsaws in floor standing models, as well.

If you can afford it, some bandsaws offer an attachment which collects all of the wood dust. Dust collectors typically come with a hose attachment that hooks up to the bandsaw. If you don’t have one of these attachments, you’ll have more clean up to do, and you may want to wear a mask when cutting to avoid inhalation of the dust. Some woods are treated with chemicals which makes the dust dangers for you to inhale.

Other safety concerns when using a bandsaw are your eyes and ears. Wood chips and dust can damage your eyes, and the noise of the motor can damage your hearing. Protective eye goggles and ear plugs or muffs.

Important considerations when selecting a bandsaw is the throat and depth of cut. The depth of cut determines the thickness of the stock you can cut on the saw; it is the distance from the saw’s table surface to the upper blade guides. Some saws with a small depth of cut offer an optional riser attachment that allows you to cut thicker stock.

The throat of the saw is the measurement from the sawblade to the back vertical section of the saw frame. This measurement determines the width of the cut you can make on your saw. A saw described as a 14-inch bandsaw is referring to a 14-inch throat measurement.

Some people new to using a bandsaw think it is going to cut curves with a great deal of ease. Bandsaws are great for cutting curves, but it requires a bit of practice at first until you learn how to make all the proper cuts required to complete a deep curve. If you try to cut a deep radius curve the wrong way, you’ll end up forcing the blade to bend and maybe even break.

Another consideration that comes into play when cutting deep curves is that you are limited by the depth of cut and the throat. This means you may have to maneuver the stock in specific ways in order to complete your cut, depending on the size of the stock you are cutting.

Be sure to read the instructions so you know how to properly adjust the blade tension. It is important to open the saw case regularly and clean out the sawdust that accumulates inside; an air compressor works great for spraying out the inside.

Lubricate the saw parts as a regular part of maintenance as noted in your saw instruction manual. Check all parts regularly for wear and replace any that become worn or damaged.

If you saw makes unusual noises or vibrates, turn it off and check everything thoroughly to make sure everything is tight and properly aligned. Operating a saw in an improper condition can cause even further damage.

A bandsaw is a wonderful addition to your crafting workshop. As with any tool you purchase, maintain it properly and use it as directed for many years of use.

Soapmaking Lye – Cold Process Soap Making Safeguards

My first adventures in soap making were a tremendous amount of fun. I will advise you, however, that it is very important to learn and understand all of the materials and ingredients you will work with in cold process soap making before you jump headfirst into a batch of soap.

Many crafters shy away from cold process soap making because of the things they have heard about soapmaking lye. There are important precautions and safeguards involved when handling lye, but you should not let it stop you from enjoying the wonderful craft of making your own soap.

Lye is not as readily available as it once was. At one time, lye could be picked up in your local grocery or hardware store. Sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda, is the technical name for lye, and was once available on the shelf as a product known as Red Devil Lye.

When you purchase your lye for soap making, you want to be sure to get lye that is specifically for use in making soap. Lye can be made with wood ashes and water, but it is rare that anyone wants to go to that amount of trouble anymore in their soapmaking craft.

I am very cautious when I work with lye, there is no doubt about it. Sometimes, though, you can be so afraid or nervous about something that it ends up making the situation worse. Know the safeguards, understand the entire soap making process, and remember always to be cautious and careful.

Most accidents caused by lye are because of haphazard handling of it in the soap making process. As with any craft or hobby, you should set aside the space and time for it, avoid distractions that are potentially dangerous, and use practical common sense.

  • Lye is caustic and it will burn. Do not leave a pitcher or cup of lye sitting close to a countertop or table edge where it can be easily knocked off or pulled off the counter by young hands.
  • Use a soap making thermometer, and always check the temperature of the lye before adding to your soap mixture.
  • Don’t take chances. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection to avoid being burned or blinded. I wear comfortable gloves that I can easily work in, not thick gloves that make me clumsy. Chemical resistant gloves are available that are easy to work in.
  • Measure your soap ingredients carefully. Don’t guess at recipe ingredients. The amount of lye you need to use is very carefully calculated based on several things, so know your facts before making soap.
  • Always add lye to water, not water to lye.
  • Allow all cold processed soaps to cure properly. Lye is still caustic until the soap has had time to cure.
  • Avoid tin, zinc, and aluminum containers for handling lye. Plastic or stainless steel containers are recommended.
  • When mixing your lye, avoid inhaling the fumes. Make your soap in a well ventilated area.
  • Keep apple cider vinegar on hand, and if you do get some lye on your skin, rinse with vinegar and then cold water. Some say milk is also something to use for neutralizing lye.
  • I usually wear long sleeves and long pants when soapmaking.
  • Store lye in a safe place at all times, even when not in use, in an airtight container, away from heat and moisture. Kids and pets are curious.
  • Mark you lye so it is evident that it is a dangerous chemical. Unmarked chemical containers are very dangerous.
  • Clean all utensils and containers after making a batch of soap.
  • Have a plan in case something does go wrong. Keep important phone numbers nearby and use them if necessary.
  • If lye is swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Call for emergency assistance immediately.
  • If you get lye in your eyes, flush with water for 25 minutes; remove contacts first if you wear them. Seek medical assistance.
  • If lye gets on your clothes, douse the area with vinegar and wash them immediately.

If you want to make soap but just aren’t ready to use lye, you can always try melt and pour soaps first. I have made make and pour soaps, but I prefer the quality of the cold processed soaps.

Melt and Pour Soap Making – Supply List

For those of you not quite ready to make cold process soaps using lye (sodium hydroxide), you can still make your own homemade soap.

I have made both kinds of soaps, and I prefer the cold processed soaps to the melt and pour variety. That is just my humble opinion, however, and you can get very creative in melt and pour soaps.

One thing I like about melt and pour soap making is that it is a bit easier than the cold process method. Melt and pour is a good method for beginners so they can get a feel for the soap making process in general.

If you do take up soap making, though, I recommend that you try both methods to see which you like best. Remember that lye soaps have to cure about 4 weeks prior to use, whereas melt and pour soaps can be used right away.

Whichever method you choose for making soaps, do proper research up front so you know exactly what is involved. Lye requires some very specific instructions regarding the amount used, the temperature, the utensils required, and so forth.

I keep a soap making notebook with all of my notes, recipes, fragrance oils used and amounts, review of the soaps after use, etc. It may take a little longer when making soaps, but it is extremely useful information I can refer back to whenever I want to repeat a successful recipe.

To make melt and pour soap, here is what you’ll need:

  • melt and pour soap base
  • container for melting – Pyrex measuring cup works well
  • weight scale
  • fragrance oil – make sure it is listed as “soap safe”
  • measuring spoons, knife, metal whisk, rubber spatula
  • dye for coloring – make sure it is listed as “soap safe”
  • cutting board
  • spray bottle of rubbing alcohol*
  • soap mold of choice – these vary widely
  • your soap making notebook

Soapmaking Techniques – Cookie Cutter Soaps

The wonderful thing about crafting is being able to create your own unique products using your imagination.

One thing I especially love about crafting is finding ways to recycle and use products that normally might be thrown away, such as molds for soaps and candles.

I also love finding ways to use things I already have on hand around the garage or kitchen. You can make a lot of different styles of soap using cookie cutters. You can use those available in your kitchen, or search for unique cutters at yard sales and old time five and ten cent stores. If you are really creative, you can even make your own cookie cutters.

In this article, we will be discussing how to make cookie cutter soaps using melt and pour soap bases.

Here is what you will need:

  • Some white and clear soap base
  • Soap safe fragrance of choice
  • Soap safe colorant dye
  • Baking sheet (requires rimmed sheet, not flat)
  • Cookie Cutters of choice
  • Knife, fork
  • Non stick cooking spray (unflavored)

Steps to make your soap:

  1. Melt your white soap base in the microwave; I use a glass Pyrex measuring cup.
  2. Add your fragrance scent to the melted soap base and stir to mix thoroughly.
  3. Lightly spray cookie sheet with non stick spray.
  4. Pour melted soap base into sheet, filling about halfway to top rim.
  5. Allow soap to cool a little, leaving it warm to the touch.
  6. Cut out small shapes with a cookie cutter, such as a heart, clover, circle, whatever you choose. We cut out hearts for Valentine Soap.
  7. Remove the cut shapes with a knife and set aside.
  8. Use a fork to “score” the soap in the cookie sheet. This will make the next layer adhere better.
  9. Melt clear soap base and add dye or colorant and fragrance. We used red as we made Valentine Soap.
  10. Pour on top of the previously poured white base, filling all cutouts and almost to the top rim of baking sheet.
  11. Allow soap to cool again until warm to the touch, slightly cooler than before on first pour.
  12. Using a larger cookie cutter (we used a larger heart than the first one), cut out soaps.
  13. You can also mix and match shapes, cutting out several different soaps using a variety of cookie cutters.
  14. If you prefer, you can cut the soap into bars instead of shapes.
  15. When soap is completely cooled, remove the bars or shapes from the pan.
  16. You can use the soap immediately, no need to cure.

Melt and pour soaps are fun to make with kids. They enjoy getting to use their own homemade soap afterwards. Be sure to supervise them at all times.

For instance, if your site domain is mysite.com, you might also register mysite.info, mysite.net, mysite.biz in order to protect your brand. This is totally optional; if you can afford it, then go ahead and do it. You still place your site on the main site domain name, mysite.com; then you forward or point the other domain names to it.
  4. There are options you can purchase for your domain name if you wish. Private registration is a common option which means that when someone looks up your domain name at whois.net, they will not see your registration information. Instead they will see domainsbyproxy information, protecting your personal information. You can review the different options available prior to checkout and decide which domain name options are for you.
  5. Once you have registered your domain name, you will need to change the nameservers to point to the server of your site host. This is achieved differently depending on the registrar you choose. Most all of them offer complete instructions for accomplishing this on their website.
